September 5, 2026, turned out to be just about the perfect day for our annual end-of-summer pilgrimage to Combine Brothers in Hermitage. Eight cars made the trip from Erie, and considering we had to drive right past Hank’s Custard without stopping, everyone deserves a medal for self-control. Somehow, we managed to keep going.

​

The weather couldn’t have been better—sunny, warm and perfect for a Miata drive. We even managed to pass only one police officer. Fortunately, we happened to be traveling somewhere in the general vicinity of the speed limit. We’re pretty sure he was disappointed. There’s always next time.

​

When we arrived at Combine Brothers, we were greeted by Pat and Ron Hoffman and Dave Seipp. The Hoffman's have been missing from our drives for quite some time. In fact, we had begun discussing whether to put their pictures on milk cartons. Fortunately, there was no need. It was great to see them again and apparently they are still willing to associate with us.

The food was good, and the portions were huge. Most of us left with enough leftovers to provide meals for several days. This led to one very important culinary question: Is it really lasagna if there’s no meat? Cheese-only lasagna seems suspicious. Some of us believe it may actually be a crime. We’ll leave the final decision to the Lasagna Police.

​

We also took the opportunity to celebrate Jean “Boom-Boom,” “Elsa,” “Jeanette,” etc. Criscione’s 70th birthday. Seventy years is quite an accomplishment, although Jean has apparently accumulated enough nicknames along the way to qualify for witness protection.

​

After lunch, and with the coolers packed with enough leftovers to feed us for the rest of the week, we headed to Handel’s for some of the best ice cream of the summer. Because nothing says “we just ate way too much” like immediately ordering ice cream.

​

It was a great day—perfect weather, good food, good friends, and no speeding tickets. What more could a bunch of aging Miata drivers ask for?

​

Well…maybe a little less cheese in the lasagna.

​

All in all, it was an excellent way to end the summer. Of course, we all know that “end of summer” is just a phrase. As long as the roads are dry, the temperatures are above freezing, and somebody suggests ice cream, the Miata’s will be ready.
